History

The Association of Old Crows (AOC) is a distinguished international not-for-profit professional association, proudly bringing together over 14,000 members and more than 100 organisations united by their expertise in Electronic Warfare (EW), Information Operations (IO), and related fields.

Spanning 47 countries, the AOC is supported by 65 chapters across 19 nations, comprising a diverse community of executives, scientists, engineers, managers, operators, educators, and military personnel. Since its founding in 1964, the AOC has been headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, DC, serving as a central hub for innovation and collaboration.

The evocative name “Old Crows” traces back to the early days of Electronic Warfare during World War II, particularly the Battle of Britain and the US-allied bombing campaigns over Europe. The operators who managed radar countermeasures were originally code-named “Ravens,” tasked with monitoring and jamming enemy frequencies. Over time, this term evolved in military slang to “Crows, a symbol of their vital role in electronic defence.

From its origins in the Second World War, Electronic Warfare has remained a cornerstone of modern military operations, critical for both peace and conflict scenarios. Today, with rapid advances in digital and computer technology, EW and IO have grown even more essential. These disciplines provide the strategic edge needed to secure knowledge superiority, maintain tactical dominance, and protect valuable assets—whether on the offensive or defensive.

Information Operations encompass all efforts to influence, affect, or defend information, information systems, and decision-making processes. Modern EW and IO capabilities extend across both analog and digital realms, covering the full spectrum from acoustic and magnetic to seismic and electromagnetic signals.

Through continuous innovation and collaboration, the Association of Old Crows remains at the forefront of shaping the future of electronic and information warfare worldwide.
